This week’s theme — Making space for liberal arts
“When your father dies, your accounting degree is not going to help you at all to process that experience. Homer will help you. The crude preoccupation with moneymaking as the only goal of a college education is giving us a citizenry that is extremely degraded, as far as I’m concerned. I think it’s only the crudest and least interesting practicality that has no time for the humanities.”
Daniel Mendelsohn on why you should read stories like The Odyssey
This week, we see how one can make some space for exploring liberal arts.
Plato, in Book VII of The Republic, mentions “Let us take every possible care that young persons do not study philosophy too early.”
But the capitalistic lifestyle of today’s age hardly allows us to explore humanities anyway, even if we are above 30. In this week’s theme, we find out how we can make some space to pursue philosophy and arts via interesting recommendations themed on it!
